What payment are you waiting for
Choose the problem that best matches your situation.
Repeated reminders can leave you unsure whether to wait or act. The right next step depends on what was agreed, what has been paid and what your records prove. Faris and Ekaterina can help you look at those points before you commit to a claim.
01
A customer has not paid
You delivered goods or finished the work. The invoice is still unpaid.
What to consider+
We review the invoice, order, delivery proof and any complaints about the work. If the customer disputes only part of the bill, we help you separate that issue from the unpaid balance and understand how it affects your claim.
You lent money. Repayment has stopped, or your messages are ignored.
What to consider+
Save the transfer records, repayment promises and details of any money already returned. We check whether the records show a loan, when repayment was due and what remains unpaid. If there was no signed agreement, we explain what other proof may help.
The bank could not pay the cheque. You need to know what happens next.
What to consider+
Keep the cheque and the bank return record. The reason for return matters. We check whether the documents support an execution request or whether the underlying debt needs another procedure. We also review any partial payment so the claim reflects the correct balance.
Rent is overdue. You want to understand the proper claim and forum.
What to consider+
Bring the tenancy agreement, rent schedule and payment records. We review the arrears and any notices already sent. Many Dubai tenancy claims belong before the Rental Disputes Center, so we check the proper forum and procedure before advising you to file.
You are waiting for a certified payment, final balance or retention money.
What to consider+
We check when the payment became due and whether the contract links it to approval, completion or the end of a defects period. Work records and certificates can be important when the other party raises a dispute about quality, delay or the amount claimed.
You have a decision. You now need advice on enforcing payment.
What to consider+
A decision does not always result in immediate payment. We review the judgment, any payments received and the current execution position. We explain what further steps may be available and how missing assets or other proceedings may affect collection.
Our debt recovery services Dubai clients can request cover unpaid business and personal debts, from the first document review to settlement or legal proceedings.
We advise individuals, business owners, suppliers, contractors, consultants and landlords. We also assess matters involving a client outside the UAE or a debtor who has moved. Each case starts with the payment records and the legal route available for that specific debt.
01
Review your debt and evidence
We check your contract, invoices, transfers and messages. We explain what your records show, what is missing and whether the claim needs further proof.
The review should identify the correct person or company to pursue and the amount still due. We also check the payment date, dispute terms and any relevant deadline. You can then decide whether the likely cost and recovery risk justify moving ahead.
02
Ask for payment and discuss settlement
We prepare legal notices where suitable and discuss payment terms. If instalments are agreed, we help record the amount, dates and consequences of missed payments.
A demand should explain why the money is owed and what payment is requested. We review the response and discuss any genuine dispute or repayment offer with you. Before accepting a settlement, we help you understand the terms and how a missed payment would be handled.
03
Bring the appropriate legal claim
We assess whether your matter needs a payment order, a court claim, arbitration or another route. The debt, written evidence and contract terms guide that choice.
A payment order may be suitable for a qualifying debt supported by written evidence. A disputed claim may need fuller proceedings and further proof. We explain the procedure, documents and decisions involved, including whether translation or expert evidence may be required.
04
Enforce payment
We advise on execution of judgments and other enforceable documents. Court measures depend on the legal conditions and assets available for payment.
The starting point is to check that the document can be enforced and what balance remains due. We then advise on available applications through the competent authority. Asset attachment is subject to legal conditions. It cannot be promised simply because a debt exists.
How we handle debt recovery Dubai claims
→
1 Share the payment problem
Tell us who owes you, the amount and when payment was due.
About this step+
Explain what the payment was for and whether the other party accepts the debt. Include any part payment or settlement offer. If you have received court papers, mention the date and any stated deadline at the first contact.
→
2 Get a clear plan
Our debt recovery lawyers review your records and explain the options, likely costs and key risks.
About this step+
We discuss the strength of the claim, possible gaps in the proof and which forum may deal with it. Ask what work the proposed fee covers and what other expenses may arise. The plan should help you make an informed choice.
→
3 Pursue payment
We can seek settlement or prepare the appropriate proceedings, depending on your case.
About this step+
You decide whether to accept a payment offer after we explain it. If proceedings are needed, we prepare the documents for the selected route. A change in the debtor’s response or evidence may require the plan to be reviewed.
→
4 Follow through on recovery
We advise on payment compliance and execution when an enforceable document is available.
About this step+
We help you keep track of payments received and the amount still outstanding. If an agreed payment is missed, we review the next available step. Where enforcement is needed, we explain the procedure and practical limits on collection.

Senior Legal Consultant
Faris Raian
Faris has more than 15 years of UAE legal experience. His work includes litigation, commercial disputes, banking and real estate matters. He can advise on debt claims involving business payments, loan terms and disputed balances.
More about Faris+
A debt may involve more than an unpaid bill. The other party may dispute delivery, rely on a guarantee or challenge the account balance. Faris’s work in these areas is relevant to reviewing the underlying dispute as well as the payment demand.
Ekaterina, also known as Kate, has more than 16 years of legal experience, including more than nine years in Dubai. Her work includes contracts, commercial matters, arbitration and settlements. She can advise on payment disputes involving agreements or parties in different countries.
More about Ekaterina+
A payment claim can turn on a small part of an agreement, such as an approval requirement or a dispute clause. Kate can help review those terms and the settlement options. For matters involving another country, the place of the claim and enforcement must also be considered.
We explain the evidence, legal route and issues that may affect recovery.
Why it matters+
You should know why a step is recommended and what it may achieve. We discuss the main strengths and weaknesses in your records, including any claim the other party may raise. This helps you decide whether to seek settlement or proceed further.
✓
Discuss the cost
Ask for a written scope and fee terms before instructing us to proceed.
Why it matters+
Check whether the quote covers a notice, negotiations, proceedings or enforcement. Those stages may need separate work. Ask about court charges, translations and experts so that you can compare the expected expense with the money you are trying to recover.
✓
Consider settlement
We can discuss payment terms when that may help resolve the debt.
Why it matters+
A workable offer can be worth considering if it gives you a clearer path to payment. We help you review the amount, instalment dates and any conditions before you agree. You remain in control of whether to accept the offer.
✓
Plan for collection
Our debt collection Dubai advice considers both the claim and the practical chance of receiving payment.
Why it matters+
The debtor’s ability to pay matters. We discuss known payment risks and whether a judgment would still require further work to collect. If information about assets is missing, we explain that uncertainty when reviewing your options.
The cost depends on the debt, evidence and work needed. Legal fees, court fees, translation, experts and execution costs may be separate. Ask for a written quote and what it covers.
Understanding the costs+
A demand and settlement discussion may need less work than a claim involving disputed performance or expert review. An existing judgment may still require separate execution work. Tell us what steps have already been taken so the quote can reflect the stage your matter has reached.
A debt collection law firm should explain the likely expense alongside the amount you want to recover. A debt recovery law firm should also discuss payment risks. No one can guarantee recovery or reimbursement of every cost.
Before you agree to proceed, ask which expenses are included, which are separate and when payment is due. Also ask whether tax applies and whether further approval will be needed for extra work. Clear fee terms help you plan the next step with fewer surprises.
Do you want payment without a longer dispute? Or have you received a demand you cannot pay in full? We can review the balance and discuss a proposed settlement.
Considering a settlement+
A settlement may involve payment in full, instalments or an agreed amount to close the dispute. We help you examine the offer alongside the strength of the claim and the risk of waiting. Do not sign a release without understanding which rights it gives up.
Debt management Dubai advice
We advise on demands, repayment terms and settlement agreements. A creditor must agree to a voluntary reduction or new payment plan. Direct enforcement of a settlement depends on its form and the law.
Responding to a demand+
If you have received a demand, gather the agreement and a current record of payments. We can help check whether the claimed balance is correct and what response is needed. Do not assume that settlement talks suspend a court deadline or an existing enforcement step.
What to bring to a debt collection lawyer Dubai consultation
Bring the records you already have.
Your documents should tell a clear story about the agreement, what you did and why payment is due. Keep a simple list of the amount claimed, payments received and the balance. If a record is missing, tell us rather than delaying the first enquiry.
Keep original records. We can explain what else is needed.
Do not change a document or crop out context that may affect its meaning. Tell us whether a document is in another language and whether you still have the original. We can advise on any translation or further proof needed for the chosen procedure.
Your document checklist0 of 6 ready
These show what was agreed and the basis of the payment. Include any later changes, purchase orders or terms accepted by email.
These help establish what was paid and what remains due. Keep dates, amounts and the relevant account details clear.
Include signed receipts, approvals, payment certificates or other records connecting your work to the unpaid invoice.
Keep the messages that explain the agreement, acknowledge the balance or promise repayment. Complete records are more useful than isolated screenshots.
The bank’s stated reason for return helps determine the available procedure. Include any correspondence about replacement cheques or part payments.
Share the name, known address and company details, where available. Also include notices, settlements, judgments or papers from an ongoing case.
Dubai debt laws in simple words
UAE debt law covers different rules for contracts, commercial payments, evidence and court proceedings. Debt collection laws also depend on the type of claim. Rent, insolvency and arbitration matters may need a different route.
Read the legal guidance+
The first question is which rules apply to your payment problem. A private loan, a commercial invoice and unpaid rent may not follow the same procedure. The contract may also set a dispute process. We review those points before recommending where and how to pursue the money.
The new Civil Transactions Law took effect on 1 June 2026. We check the rules and deadlines that apply to your claim. Asset attachment and travel restrictions require the proper legal basis and a decision from the competent authority.
The claim date, payment due date and later events can matter when assessing an older debt. There is no single deadline or court measure that fits every case. Have those issues checked before relying on a general answer found online.
Gather records showing why the money is owed, the balance and the due date. A lawyer can advise on a notice, settlement or legal proceedings after reviewing those records.
Include any response from the debtor and a record of part payments. Avoid starting with only the amount you want back. The reason the payment is due and the quality of your proof help determine how the claim should be pursued.
Can I recover a debt without a signed contract
+
Possibly. Messages, invoices, transfers and repayment records may help. A transfer alone may not prove a loan. The debt amount and evidence rules also matter.
Your records may need to show why the money was sent, who must repay it and what terms were agreed. Keep evidence of any repayments or admissions. A lawyer can assess the full record and explain whether further proof is needed.
Can WhatsApp messages prove a debt
+
They may help if they identify the parties and explain the debt or repayment promise. Keep the complete conversation and original records. The court decides their value.
The court may need to assess who sent the messages and whether the record is complete and authentic. Keep the original conversation on the device where possible, together with related payment records. Do not rely only on one message taken out of context.
Should I go to the police or file a civil claim
+
An unpaid debt is not automatically a crime. A payment dispute may require civil proceedings. Facts suggesting fraud or another offence need a separate legal assessment.
Tell your lawyer what was said when the money was obtained and what happened afterwards. A broken payment promise alone does not settle whether an offence occurred. The correct assessment depends on the facts and supporting evidence.
Can a legal notice lead to payment without court
+
It may lead to payment or settlement. It cannot force payment by itself. If it is ignored, a lawyer can advise on the next procedure.
The notice can make the claim clear and give the debtor an opportunity to respond. Its wording and service should fit the intended procedure. If you receive a reply disputing the debt, have that response reviewed before choosing the next step.
Can I take a bounced cheque directly to execution
+
A cheque with the required bank statement showing insufficient or no funds can qualify under Article 667 of the Commercial Transactions Law. The return reason and documents must be checked.
Bring the cheque, bank return record and details of any money already paid. The procedure should reflect the actual unpaid amount. If the return reason or underlying transaction raises a separate issue, it may require a different assessment.
What if the debtor says they paid me in cash
+
Keep your messages, receipts and payment records. Explain what you received and what remains disputed. The court will assess the evidence. Do not edit or delete records.
Make a dated record of the disputed payment and any conversation about it. Separate the amount you accept receiving from the amount still unpaid. A lawyer can help you present a clear account without assuming that either party’s statement proves the case.
How long does debt recovery take
+
There is no fixed time. The evidence, debtor response, legal procedure and available assets affect progress. Receiving payment after a decision can take additional time.
A debtor may respond to a notice, or the matter may need hearings and further evidence. Appeals and execution can add time. Ask for an estimate after the documents are reviewed, with an explanation of the issues that may change it.
Can I recover money if the debtor has left the UAE
+
Leaving does not settle the debt. The options depend on jurisdiction, service of documents, assets and the rules for enforcing a decision in the relevant country.
The place where the debtor has moved and the location of assets are important. If collection would require action abroad, the cost and procedure need to be checked. A UAE decision is not automatically enforceable in every other country.
Can a bank account be frozen for an unpaid debt
+
The court may order attachment when the legal conditions are met. A creditor or lawyer cannot freeze an account independently.
Whether an application is available depends on the legal basis, evidence and procedural stage. Some measures may require an enforceable document, while others have separate conditions. Your lawyer should explain what fits your case and what the authority must decide.
Is it worth pursuing a small debt
+
Compare the amount owed with the likely costs. A notice or settlement may be worth discussing before proceedings. Ask for advice on the practical options.
Ask whether the evidence is clear and whether the debtor has a realistic ability to pay. A smaller claim may still be important, but each further step can add expense. Review those costs before committing to proceedings.
Can I claim interest and legal costs
+
That depends on the debt, agreement and applicable rules. Have the legal basis checked before adding interest or penalties. Full reimbursement of legal costs is not guaranteed.
Different rules may apply to private and commercial debts. The wording of the agreement and the type of charge matter. Ask your lawyer to explain what can properly be claimed and which expenses may remain yours even if you win.
What if the company cannot pay
+
Insolvency or bankruptcy proceedings may affect deadlines and recovery options. Keep your records and seek advice promptly about how to present your claim.
The options can depend on the type and stage of the proceedings. There may be a formal process for submitting the debt and limits on individual enforcement. Do not assume that a pending claim or judgment gives you priority over other creditors.
Can I negotiate instalments or dispute the balance
+
You can propose instalments, but the creditor may refuse. If the balance is wrong, raise the issue with supporting records and observe any response deadline.
Keep written records of the proposal and any agreement reached. If you dispute the balance, identify the specific error and the payments or contract terms that support your position. A lawyer can help you respond without overlooking a procedural deadline.
